Due to the elimination of several literacy-related funding streams at the federal and state level, LIFT-Missouri will cease operations on December 31, 2012.
The LIFT board has reached the difficult conclusion that it is unable to sustain the organization's mission without solid fiscal resources to provide high quality literacy-related training, technical assistance and resources to programs throughout Missouri.
Over the last 24 years, LIFT has relied heavily on a national literacy infrastructure that has slowly been dismantled over the last few years. Federal funding for research around adult literacy, which LIFT utilized for professional development projects for adult and family literacy teachers, was eliminated. Federal funds for family literacy through Even Start were eliminated last year. And funding for parental involvement on which LIFT relied to provide training and resources for teachers and low-literate parents was also eliminated.
In addition, state funding for training adult and family educators was eliminated several years ago. Even the National Institute for Literacy, which was a strong federal partner in disseminating literacy information and resources to LIFT for almost twenty years, was dissolved two years ago.
As Missouri's Literacy Resource Center, LIFT has applied creative and feasible approaches to literacy-related issues. With a wide range of partner agencies and organizations, LIFT developed and implemented projects based on current research to enhance the capacity of local programs to provide quality literacy services, while improving accountability. LIFT provided a wide range of training opportunities for adult educators, early childhood educators, volunteer tutors, program directors and others. With offices in St. Louis and Kansas City, LIFT provided training programs and technical assistance throughout Missouri for over 20 years.
LIFT would like to thank our supporters, funders, partners for their efforts over the years in helping LIFT improve the literacy skills of Missourians.
To develop and promote resources to increase the literacy skills of Missourians so all individuals can reach their personal and economic potential.
