Introduction to Family Literacy:
Understanding the Model and Its Relevancy to Your Program
Training Description
Research based on the National Center for Family Literacy shows that a family joining together to expand their literacy activities on a daily basis not only increases the educational growth for the children, but also strengthens the family relationship. Family literacy is a detailed program that addresses the educational needs of the adults and provides the skills the adults need to support the literacy development of the children so they will be successful in school.
This one day interactive workshop will demonstrate and expand on the federally sponsored four-component family literacy model. Federal law defines family literacy as “…services that are of sufficient intensity in terms of hours, and of sufficient duration, to make sustainable changes in a family and that integrate all four of the following activities:
• Interactive literacy activities between parents and their children.
¶ Training for parents regarding how to be the primary teacher for their children and full partners in the education of their children.
• Parent literacy training that leads to economic self-sufficiency.
• An age-appropriate education to prepare children for success in school and life experiences.”
Research shows that enrollment in a family literacy program increases the retention of adults in literacy classes; improves that adult’s educational achievement; and increases the chances of economic self-sufficiency. By learning to support their children’s educational experiences in a positive manner, adults increase their children’s attendance and achievements in the education system.
The workshop will explore the model Even Start program and examine how variations of the model can be incorporated into existing literacy programs.
